It's on the International Lyrics Server Actually, the song is an adaptation by Jimmy Sturr, I think. It's on his 1996 "Polka! All Night Long" CD on rounder - it's a great CD, as are all of the Jimmy Sturr recordings. Sturr's adaptation is that after the lead singer sings the bit about 24 years of living next door to Alice, the band shouts, "Alice? Alice? Who the hell is Alice?" I did not, repeat did NOT hear Sturr's band use any expletive stronger than "hell." Oh, it's a good CD. It really is. Willie Nelson and the Jordanaires help with some of the vocals. LIVING NEXT DOOR TO ALICE By Smokie (1977) Written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman Transcribed by Frantic Freddy; What I Hear Is What You Get (errors included) Sally called when she got the word And she said "I suppose you've heard, 'bout Alice" Well I rushed to the window, and I looked outside But I could hardly believe my eyes As a big limousine rode up onto Alice's drive Chorus: Oh, I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't wanna know 'Cos for 24 years I've been living next door to Alice 24 years just waitin' for a chance To tell her how I feel and maybe get a second glance Now I gotta get used to not living next door to Alice We grew up together, two kids in the park Carved our initials deep in the bark, me an' Alice Now she walks through the door, with her head held high Just for a moment I caught her eye As the big limousine pulled slowly out of Alice's drive (chorus) Then Sally called back, and asked how I felt And she said, "I know how to help, to get over Alice" She said, "Now Alice is gone, but I'm still here You know, I've been waiting 24 years..." And the big limousine disappeared I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't wanna know 'Cos for 24 years I've been living next door to Alice 24 years just waitin' for a chance To tell her how I feel and maybe get a second glance But I'll never get used to not living next door to Alice No, I'll never get used to not living next door to Alice The Who Wrote That Song? book (Dick & Harriet Jacobs) verifies that the song was written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, and popularized by a group called Smokie. The date given for the song is 1977, but I don't know if that's the song publication date or the date of the Smokie recording. Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate Subject: RE: Alice, Alice, Who the From: GUEST,Geoff the Duck Date: 24 Jun 07 - 09:27 AM Smokie are a band who came from my home town, Bradford. They were fairly popular mid 1970s and Alice was probably their best known chart record. According to Joe's posting at the start of the thread it was Written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Chinn and Chapman were record producers who dominated the UK pop charts around that time. They took or created bands, often gave them an "image" and wrote the songs which the group then performed. If I remember correctly their stable of artistes included the Sweet (Ballroom Blitz / Blockbuster) and Suzi Quatro, plus many others. In the 1980s, Stock, Aitken and Waterman did a very similar thing. Smokie had their chart success and then disppeared from the charts, but still kept performing. The first time I was aware of the version of the lyrics under discussion in this thread was at least two years before the recording with Roy "Chubby" Brown. A bunch of friends who I know from various folk festivals had organised a trip to Ireland. Someone had booked a couple of cottages and stopped there for a week or two. They all came back singing "Who the...." More than one of them are Mudcatters, so they might add more to the story than I know. When in Ireland they had happened across a CD Single recorded by Smokie and on release in Eire. It contained four tracks. One was either the original recording (or a new re-recording)of Alice. The second was a Live version recorded at a concert somewhere in Ireland. The band were singing the song fairly "straight" but when they reached the chorus all the audience were shouting "Who the ****". Track three was the live version with the audience "bleeped" and the fourth track was a fairly nice "new" song. The story went that the "Who the ****" is something which was started by some audience members when on tour in Ireland, and it had caught on and spread until the band couldn't sing it out without getting the audience response. Presumably someone then decided that if it was released a single, it would sell in Ireland, and obviously it did. This recording of Alice is not the version released a few years later in the UK. That record was still Smokie, but they imported "Chubby" Brown, who is known for being a foul mouthed "blue" comedian. I've not ever seen him perform so don't actually know what his material consists of, but it is "sold" as being X-Rated. Presumably the record company thought that having a known "foul mouth" comic putting in the "****"s would sell more copies in England than releasing the Irish recording. After writing the above, I have just looked in Wikipedia and most of what they say ties in with what I recall (BLICKY- Smokie; BLICKY2 - Gompie). They do not mention the Irish CD, but I did once have a copy (possibly still do have somewhere) won as a prize in some competition or raffle. It also says that the musicians who became Smokie got together at a school which I attended about 10 years later. I was aware that at least one of them lived just up the road from the Seabrooks Crisps factory in Bradford. Quack! GtD. Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate Subject: RE: Alice, Alice, Who the From: Leadfingers Date: 24 Jun 07 - 11:19 AM That's interesting Geoff ! Always though Chubby was to blame ! Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate Subject: RE: Alice, Alice, Who the From: GerryMc Date: 24 Jun 07 - 12:26 PM Smokie were indeed a Bradford band. My brother went to school with 'em at St. Bedes. They were once called the Elizabethans coz they wore ruffled collars. Nice! The 'famous' line-up was... Chris Norman - Lead Vocals Alan Silson - Guitar Terry Utley - Bass Pete Spencer - Drums Chris, Alan and Terry were all at school with our kid and Pete came from Leeds. When they released their first album 'Pass it Around' the spelling was 'Smokey' but they changed it to 'Smokie' to avoid any confusion with Smokey Robinson. I saw them play live a number of times in the mid 70s when they were just hitting the charts. They did a blinding gig supporting Pilot at Leeds Town Hall in 1975. Personally I thought their own songs were stronger than Chinn/Chapman covers they did. Living Next Door to Alice was orginally recorded by New World in 1973 and was by no means Smokie's best effort, although perhaps the one song that people remember them by. If you need to know more there's loads on Wikipedia. Not really what you'd call a folk thread but they influenced me and probably many other musicians starting out in the 70's. They could sing and they could play. Now there's a thing! Charlotte Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate Subject: RE: Alice, Alice, Who the From: alanabit Date: 25 Jun 07 - 03:35 PM I think they were probably very good musicians, but you can't really tell from the pop singles. I was never a fan. I got to meet Alan Silson and Terry in the nineties, because they often toured Germany on those oldies band package tours and they did some recording near Cologne. I had a pint with them from time to time at the Corkonian in Cologne, where I still go occasionally and where I used to gig in those days. Alan told me that they were really more into blues. He said that when he and Terry were at home, they would ring up a couple of mates and do their own thing in local pubs. I can well believe Gerry Mc's story of a blinding gig by them. The story of the pop group is a tale which has often been told in the business. They were starving and needed to feed their families. So they accepted a record deal, which meant that they had to record Chinn Chapman songs, produced by Micky Most. They were part of the hit factory, which included Suzi Quatro, Mud, Sweet and New World. The hits came and they made an adequate living. One sad footnote came a few months after the last time I saw them. The replacement singer, Alan Barton, who had replaced Chris Norman, was killed in a car accident on the autobahn near Gummersbach (about thirty miles east of Köln). For a long time, as I only knew Alan Silson by his first name, I feared that he had been the casualty. You have to feel for Alan Barton's family anyway. I remember hearing this to pub bands who sang 'Living Next Door To Alice' and the reported response to 'Oh Boy' that Liz reported - the other favourite (and like the originator I shall delete/asterisk the expletives: The song was "Will I Ever See (Your Face Again)?" The line is sung: "Will I ever see your face again?" And the standard response(in time to the beat and ending just as the question is repeated) is : "No Way! Get F*****! F*** Off!" Very crude - but also, peculiarly, very Australian! Muttley Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate Subject: RE: Origin: Alice, Alice, Who the F*** Is Alice? It was quite funny to see some very demure young ladies joining in the "Who the...." lines with no embarrassment at all. When the Germans made the return trip to visit us, they had to be taken to one side and encouraged not to sing it so loudly in our chosen English bar. Weasel. Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate Subject: RE: Origin: Alice, Alice, Who the F*** Is Alice? From: beeliner Date: 31 Jan 10 - 07:28 PM The first version I heard was the German version by Guildo Horn and the Orthopedic Socks, of which there are (at least) two variations. In one, the verses are in German but the cheer/shout is in English, and this appears on several compilation CDs which contain little or no other vulgarity. The other is entirely in German, with the shout softened to "Wer verdammt ist Alice?" ("Who the hell is Alice"). But the English version by Smokie is often heard there also, the group was quite popular there, as was Chris Norman solo. The question asked was about "Who the ****" recorded by Smokie (and various Dutch or German artistes), not the original song. Info about Smokie is relevant, but any earlier recording has NOTHING to do with the subject of the thread. Let's face it, Joe. We got ALL our facts right and a damn sight more facts than either Wikipedia or some ignorant rude "guest". Quack! GtD.
